Maricopa County's Phoenix -- in the heart of the Sonoran Desert -- is known for sunshine, exceptional golfing, great shopping, and southwestern hospitality for ultime relaxation. Museums for many tastes include Taliesin West (home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation), the Phoenix Art Museum, the Fleischer Museum for American Impressionism, and the Hall of Flame with the world's largest collection of fire-fighting equipment. The Heard Museum has Native American artifacts, including the largest kachina doll collection -- many donated by Arizona's late U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater -- of any museum in the country.

Retail strongholds in the valley include the renowned Biltmore Fashion Park, Scottsdale Fashion Square, and the new Kierland Commons. Antique hunters head to historic Old Towne and Catlin Court in Glendale to stroll bricked sidewalks leading to more than 80 antique stores and specialty shops. Galleries and visual art spaces have transformed the Greater Phoenix arts and culture scene, bringing energy, color and identity to the region's cultural mix. Wood sidewalks of Old Town Scottsdale provide glimpses of art and more in storefronts. Main Street brims with original southwestern art and eclectic gifts, as does Mill Avenue in Tempe near Arizona State University. Outdoor activity includes hiking, biking, horseback riding along scenic desert trails, hot air ballooning and more. Numerous ranches provide settings for western-style fun, and five major lakes are within an hour's drive.

Greater Phoenix plays host to nine major league baseball teams each spring as part of the Cactus League. The San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Anaheim Angels conduct annual training programs in the metro area. Greater Phoenix, including Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa, offers more than 55,000 rooms some 450 hotels and luxury resorts such as The Boulders Resort, The Waldorf Astoria Collection, The Camelback Inn, a JW Marriott Resort & Spa, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and the Four Seasons Resort at Troon North.
